Practice Recordings and Scrimmages
Practice recordings
Use Practice for anything that isn’t a game or a scrimmage: drills, tryouts, a skills video. (On SideoutTally the button is Practice Recording.)
- Tap Practice on the camera phone, or Practice Recording on SideoutTally.
- If you have more than one of My Teams, pick which team it’s for (it uploads to that team’s Drive folder and playlist).
- Name it, e.g. “Serving drills”, and tap Start Recording. Recording starts as soon as the camera is ready.
Practice recordings:
- have no scoreboard and no sponsors;
- can have highlights;
- are named like
20261004-Serving-drills.mov, and recording again with the same name on the same day continues the same practice; - upload to a folder like “20261004 Serving drills” on Google Drive.
Stop with Stop, and finish with ⋯ ▸ End Practice (SideoutTally) or the ✕ on the camera screen.
Scrimmages
A scrimmage splits your team’s roster into two sides (Team A vs. Team B) and scores it like a game, with the scoreboard on the video.
- Tap Scrimmage on either phone. On the camera phone it’s for the team shown under Filming for; on SideoutTally, pick the team if you have more than one.
- Pick the sides, one of two ways (the switch at the top; your choice is remembered):
- Fill one side: everyone starts on Team B. Tap players to put them on Team A; everyone else plays for Team B. Tap a Team A player again to send them back.
- Captains pick: everyone starts in a pool, and each tap gives the next player to the side whose pick it is (Team A, Team B, Team A…), as captains taking turns. Choose which side picks first; Undo Pick takes back a mis-tap; Rest to Smaller Side (or just tapping Start) puts whoever’s left on the side with fewer players.
- Same as Last Time brings back the last scrimmage’s split. Shuffle makes a random, even split of everyone playing. Clear starts over.
- Press and hold a player and tap Sit Out for anyone not playing today; tap them under Sitting out to bring them back.
- Rename the sides if you like (“Blue” and “White”, up to 10 characters).
- Choose how each set ends: Play on (no target: the set ends whenever you tap End Set, even on a tied score, which then counts for neither side), To 15 or To 25 (win by 2).
- Tap Start. The camera opens with the scoreboard. Tap Record when play starts.
The split (for Same as Last Time), the side names and the target are remembered for that team’s next scrimmage.
During a scrimmage:
- Score, End Set, Pause, Highlight and stats work as in a game. There’s no limit on sets: keep going until you end the scrimmage. The scoreboard shows the last four sets.
- Sides (under End Set on SideoutTally, or in the camera’s score controls) shows who’s on which side: tap a player to move them across, or hold to sit them out.
- When tagging a highlight, pick the side, then the player.
- Stats list both sides’ players. A stat that ends the rally scores for the side the player is on: a Kill by a Team B player is a point for Team B.
- There are no lineups or warm-ups in a scrimmage.
- Go Live works; viewers see “Scrimmage: Team A vs. Team B” on the cards.
When you upload the scrimmage to Google Drive, its Game Summary lists the Teams (who was on each side, and who sat out), and notes Sides changed under any set where players had moved.
Finish with ⋯ ▸ End Scrimmage (SideoutTally) or the ✕ on the camera screen: Save Score & End keeps the score and sides to resume later; End Scrimmage finishes it. If the app closes unexpectedly, the scrimmage can be resumed from the home screen. (If you have a game saved to resume later, a scrimmage leaves it alone and isn’t saved itself.)
Scrimmages:
- are named like
20261007-Scrimmage-TeamA-TeamB-Set-1.mov, with highlights like20261007-Scrimmage-TeamA-TeamB-Set-1-Parker-Kill.mov; - are listed in Games marked “Scrimmage”, under the team they were filmed for;
- upload to a folder like “20261007 Scrimmage Team A vs. Team B” on Google Drive (never in a tournament folder), with a highlight reel and Game Summary like games;
- are not included in player reels.
