Recording, Pausing and Timeouts
Recording a set
- Start Recording (SideoutTally) or Record (camera screen) starts recording the set in progress.
- Stop ends the recording and saves it. Highlights are cut from it right after.
- Record each set separately: Stop, End Set, then Start Recording for the next set.
Each set is saved as its own video, named like 20261004-Westview-Eastside-Set-1.mov. If you record a set in two parts, the second is …-Set-1-Part-2.mov.
The scoreboard (and your team’s sponsors) are part of the video itself, exactly as you see them on the camera screen.
Pausing
Tap Pause during a recording. In a game, Sideout asks why:
- Westview timeout / Eastside timeout: recording resumes by itself after the timeout length (30 or 60 seconds, set in Start Game). Both phones show a countdown. Tap Keep Paused if the timeout runs long.
- Other delay (injury, equipment, …): stays paused until you resume. If you’re live, you can type a short message for viewers.
Scoring a point while paused resumes recording straight away, so a forgotten pause never costs you a rally. Paused time is cut out cleanly: the video has no gap.
In a practice recording, Pause doesn’t ask (unless you’re streaming live).
If something goes wrong
- The phone shuts down mid-recording (dead battery, a ball hits it): the video is safe up to about the last 10 seconds. Next time you open SideoutCam, it adds the recording back to Games, marked recovered, and tells you.
- Recording stops on its own (storage full, camera interrupted): everything recorded until then is saved and added to Games, marked recovered.
- A phone call on the camera phone interrupts the camera. Use Do Not Disturb or a Focus mode during games.
Storage
Video takes space: about 4.5 GB per hour at 1080p 60 fps (Standard bitrate). Start Game shows an estimate for your settings. After the game, upload and then delete games, or move them to an external drive (After the Game).
